The Ins and Outs of Working for the Government
Hello, good day to all. My family owns a trucking company on St. John. Apart from the regular trucking that we do, we also work for the government hauling trash from St. John to St. Thomas at the Bovoni Landfill. My company has three roll-off trucks and about 30 bins that we have distributed throughout the island of St. John for citzens to throw their trash in. We have been working for the government for a few years now and enjoy what we do. This job is very demanding and requires us to work 7 days a week, 365 days a year. There are many mornings that I have started work at 5:30 and finish around 6 or 7 oclock. This is mainly because we have to travel on the barge and the traffic between St. Thomas and St. John is pretty heavy. The only problem we have with working for the government is the fact that they take so long to pay. Sometimes it seems like we have to beg for our money or else we will never get it. It is a shame our the government of the Virgin Islands make so many businesses suffer because they don't pay whenever they want. My family works so hard to make sure that the job that we do for the government gets done. I wish that the government would do the right thing and take care of the many businesses that keep the island running efficiently.

This is a shame! The irony is that when its tax time and you dont pay your taxes, the government and the IRS are on your ass and ready to shut you down. I've seen this first hand at another garbage hauling company in St. Thomas. I'm sure that if your company wasn't doing its regular jobs in St. John that it would be near closing down if it had to depend solely on its income from the government. Bills wont be paid on time and more importantly, employees wont be paid on time and would probably leave or take legal action when the situation becomes intolerable.
ReplyDeleteYea thank god we have our regular jobs for real or else we would be in deep water.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you both; the Virgin Islands' government need to pay their workers on time and also the monetary amount that they deserve. I ofen think that our government workers are not paid a fair salary. Thank you for the services that your family business provides to our neighboring island St. John.
ReplyDeleteIt is very sad that our goverment is so unreliable. By them not paying on time it puts a lot of stress on small business owners who have employees to pay and cant do so because the goverment will not pay their bill.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment and I agree. I feel that our government workers could receive a better salary.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with u when it comes to government not paying. They really sucks at times. Have to keep running behind them for ur money which should not be. But then again, we must remember the government neva have money so i guess. Lol lol
ReplyDeleteBut its good thing there is other jobs to back up. Great job..
Jerrel, tell us the name of the business. As stated by others, we tend to have limited options when we owe the government but have to wait when they owe us. We should remember we are the government. Our taxes and fees is what they turn around to pay others.
ReplyDeleteThe bottom line is that the Government needs to step up to the plate, very often the little man have to go out of business just because the Government is not paying their bills, for example if I don't pay my WAPA bill they are going to cut me but if a Government office don't pay for months they will not get cut off and my question is "Why the hell not"? This is so unfair. The company has bills and employees to pay too.
ReplyDeleteThis seems to be a worldwide trend for all Governments. They need to understand that their role is crucial for the stimulation of the economy. If businesses have to suffer because of Government not paying debts the resulting spinoff is reduced business activity and this only hampers a country's economy.
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame how the government treats people and I can totally see where your coming from.
ReplyDeleteI don't know much about trucking companies but do you guys have much competition within the Virgin Islands? The reason for this question is because you mentioned that sometimes it seems like you have to beg the government to pay, so I was wondering if the government had a few options available within the Virgin Islands, so that you had to put up with the treatment or else they get someone else..
ReplyDeleteBoy I feel your pain...everywhere you go its the same thing just at varying levels....Government Quick to collect and slow to pay out!
ReplyDeleteI hope you guys get through man and one day get the upper hand in a sense, like if you were to become their only option or most efficient option and have them as we say "up a gum tree"
Hold it down and keep the faith me boi.
Thank you all for your comments
